Cancer in Alberta

An estimated 14 200 new cases of cancer (7 500 men; 6 700 women) and 5 600 deaths from cancer (2 900 men; 2 700 women) are expected in Alberta in 2006.

  • On average, 273 Albertans will be diagnosed with cancer every week
  • On average, 107 Albertans will die of cancer every week

Approximately 1 in 2 Albertans will develop cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 4 will die of cancer

Among Albertans in the productive age group of 35-64, cancer is the leading cause of death. It causes 40% of all deaths for this age group which is more than cardiovascular disease, stroke, infectious diseases and accidental injury combined.
